Air conditioning service FAQs

What does AC maintenance include?

An AC maintenance check is not as thorough as an Air conditioning tuneup, but is done to inspect, check, and lubricate various components.

Here are some of the things a maintenance service will check for:

  • Leaking

  • Coils

  • Damage

  • Debris around the outdoor unit

  • Fan motor operation

  • drain line and pan clogs

  • Blower

  • Lubrication

  • supply and return line function

  • Coolant level

  • Electrical connections

How often should air conditioning units be serviced?

We tell people to have their unit tuned-up twice a year: once before peak cooling season, and once before they turn their heat on. If you don’t have an HVAC or don’t use your heat, have the air conditioning unit serviced twice a year. If you neglect the regular maintenance chores such as changing the filter once a month and cleaning the debris around the outdoor unit, having a maintenance check more often is not out of the realm of reason.

We also recommend that people who have older or problematic units have the unit checked more often. We can make a maintenance plan for you, based on your cooling needs, the age of your unit, and the neighborhood environmental factors. We also recommend that our customers change their filter every month and keep debris and plant material away from the outdoor portion of the system.

How often should AC filters be changed?

Change your air filter every month. When you change it, if the filter seems excessively dirty, for example, in homes that have multiple pets or animals with long fur, change it more often. Filters aren’t expensive, and keeping your air conditioning coils clean helps the unit work better.

What is done during an AC tune up?

An AC tuneup is the handiest way for a homeowner to know that their system is in top working order.

A technician comes out and performs a variety of checks, services, cleaning, and inspections, including some of those listed here:

  • Check coolant and refrigerant levels (Freon)

  • Inspect the evaporator coil

  • Check and replace the air filter if necessary

  • Test the compressor amperage during startup

  • Examine the outdoor disconnect

  • Check wiring that connects capacitors, contacts, and relay

  • Calibrate the thermostat to ensure proper temperatures and cooling cycles

  • Check the condensate drain for blockage or buildup

  • Clean the condenser

  • Check the fins for damage

  • Air conditioner troubleshooting

  • Assorted safety tests of major components

  • Test the thermostat
