How to Troubleshoot Your HVAC thermostat
When a homeowner has HVAC problems, there are some easy ways to determine if it might be the thermostat. While the thermostat isn’t usually the first problem that comes to mind, it makes sense that this little ‘brain box’ can have problems or just wear out. Here are some of the signs the thermostat needs to be repaired or replaced:
Some of the common signs of thermostat failure
The display isn’t reading or is blank
The heater or a/c runs continuously
The heater or a/c won’t run
The temperature setting and the room temperature are different
Some options that might revive a thermostat
Check the breaker box to see if there is a tripped breaker. If there is, turn it back on.
Make sure it’s set to the season. If the a/c is on in winter or heat is on in summer, it won’t work.
Try changing the temperature by five degrees--lower in winter, higher in summer--to see if it will kick on. Listen for the mechanical click and the blower turning on. In summer, you can check the filter at the return vent to see if it’s concave from the force of the air.
Put fresh batteries in it if it’s electronic. This often fixes a blank screen
Mechanical: Turn the breaker off at the circuit breaker box and take the cover off the thermostat. Use a small brush to whisk away dust, which can cause thermostat problems.
While the cover is still off, examine the wires. Look closely at each one and ascertain it is still firmly connected to its mounting screw. Tighten as needed. Don’t forget to flip the breaker back on once you put the thermostat cover back in place.
If a thermostat isn’t level, it won’t work properly. Use a level to make sure it’s still straight, especially if it has been jarred somehow, such as being hit with a piece of furniture.
Professional help
If you’ve tried all of these actions, and nothing has worked, schedule an HVAC professional to come to troubleshoot the thermostat. Sometimes the thermostat can be repaired. The bad news is that a home thermostat only lasts about ten years. The good news is that Smart thermostats have exploded in popularity because of the control, energy savings, and ease of use they offer. So, even if your thermostat can’t be fixed, the potential for savings by replacing it with a new one is so vast that it will pay for itself and the service call in a few short months.
If you have a thermostat that seems to be causing problems, but you don’t want to try to troubleshoot it yourself, we understand. We’re happy to come out and diagnose the problem whether you’ve taken the steps listed above or not. DIY, while popular, is not for everyone.
