Ways to  Keep Cool on Hot August Nights

There are multiple ways to improve sleep quality in the summer heat.

Uncomfortably hot temperatures can make it challenging to fall asleep or maintain a good night's rest. And getting enough sleep is crucial to mental health and overall wellbeing. Conversely, inadequate sleep can lead to various issues such as headaches, exhaustion, and constant irritation. Fortunately, there are multiple ways to improve sleep quality in the summer heat. This article will examine some of the best ways to keep cool at night.

Take a warm shower before bed

It's advisable to take a warm, refreshing shower before bed. Doing so will help cool the body as it causes vasodilation, which is the expansion of blood vessels. The increased blood flow to the hands and feet allows more heat to escape the body, bringing down core body temperature.

However, it's generally best to do this a couple of hours before bed for those who prefer to take a bath. This is because baths tend to warm the body, and it will take some time for the core temperature to drop.

Close curtains during the day

Keeping the windows and doors open all day can help cool the home if it's hot outside. The breeze that flows through the house offers relief from the day's heat. However, keeping the curtains closed when the sun is out would be best. These drapes minimize the amount of heat making its way into the house.

Swapping out dark curtains for light-colored fabrics can also help reflect some of the sun's powerful rays. This is one of the reasons why houses in hot climates are often painted white. Keeping the interior cool during the day will reduce overheating at night.

Use a cooling mattress pad

There are various types of mattresses and pads designed to be more breathable. Although they don't provide active cooling, they consist of materials that don't hold as much heat as others in the market. So even though it's impossible to eliminate heat build-up under the covers completely, a breathable mattress can help improve the comfort and cooling of the body.

Advancements in mattress technology have led to the development of the memory foam variety. It can be a comfortable option, but it traps heat and isn't very suitable in the summer. Instead, try removing the topper to see if that helps cool things down. Latex is a much more breathable material, and selecting a topper made from this fabric will be a better fit on hot nights.

Install an air conditioner

Although the tips mentioned above can help make for a pleasant sleep, the most efficient way to cool the home is by using an air conditioner. This unit can be set to automatically adjust the temperature, ensuring optimal conditions throughout the night.
